Gaskets tested to the limit
New state-of-the-art test equipment now enables James Walker to assess gasket efficiency with a high degree of accuracy for all operating conditions.
Supplied by Amtec, Germany, the rig performs creep tests at elevated temperatures, as well as load-compression-leakage tests to international standards including EN13555 gasket characterisation as used in the EN1591 flange design method.
The rig has a 100 tonne press with platens that can be heated to 400°C and pressurised to 200bar.
Gasket sealing performance is monitored by a helium mass spectrometer that detects very low leakage levels. Testing procedures are computer controlled and all data are captured electronically.
Continuous product improvement is key to the provision of successful gasket performance for James Walker's customers, as operating conditions become more arduous and environmental legislation requires the highest standards to be met.
This test equipment enhances James Walker's ability to provide customers with vital data to support correct gasket selection for all applications, and ensure joint integrity with an extended life cycle.
Reported Mark Richardson of James Walker Technology Centre: "The increased accuracy of our load-leakage data gives customers added confidence in bolted joint sealing systems".
James Walker has a joint integrity programme that provides a total sealing solution coupled with the tension control accuracy of RotaBolt® flange tightening. With this, customers can achieve minimum risk solutions for their pipework and pressure vessels.
