Description
Our Lion® Expanding packing set is a heavy-duty design that has been in service on arduous applications for many years. The profile of the sealing lips is suitable for duties where side loads and high pressure peaks are encountered on equipment such as forging presses.
On heavy duty hydraulic duties it provides efficient sealing and gives 'bearing' support to the ram - which is particularly beneficial when the ram is horizontal. This 'bearing' role is a very successful feature that relies on the use of deep rings of robust construction to offer radial support to a large ram.
The Lion® Expanding set comprises a heavy-duty gland ring/female adapter, two or more intermediate rings, and a header ring. The sealing rings incorporate double lips. A V-shape base on the intermediate rings ensures that this robust packing responds automatically to system pressure and gives wedging action under gland compression - which helps to keep equipment in service even with worn bushes or rams.
The sealing rings are moulded with an interference fit on the lips to give effective sealing at low pressure, which is augmented when system pressure is applied. The gland ring has a heavily reinforced base to resist extrusion, and individual rings are of very robust proportions to resist distortion under heavy side loads and high-pressure peaks.

Materials of construction
Gland ring/female adapter (standard material): heavy duty cotton fabric proofed with medium nitrile NBR rubber.
Gland ring/female adapter (special materials): heavy duty synthetic fabric proofed with hydrogenated nitrile HNBR, butyl IIR or fluorocarbon FKM rubber.
Intermediate rings (standard and special materials): as for gland ring.
Header ring (standard materials): Type 1 - nitrile/styrene-butadiene blend of 100 IRHD; Type 2 - moulded or machined nylon; Type 3 - extruded nitrile of 85-95 IRHD.
Header ring (special materials): acetal; glass-loaded PTFE; or 100 IRHD nitrile rubber compounded for use with phosphate esters.
Media capabilities
Standard materials are suitable for use with most mineral based hydraulic fluids, most fire-resistant fluids of the water/oil emulsion or water/glycol types at temperatures up to 100°C, and resist most lubricating oils, greases, air and water.
Alternative (special) materials are available that considerably extend the range of applications in terms of temperature, fluid compatibility and abrasion resistance.
How supplied
Split packing sets to suit standard housing sections are available without tooling charges for ram diameters of 300mm to 1875mm, and 12 inch to 74 inch. We also have a substantial library of mould tools for split and endless sets. Other sizes manufactured to order.
