Chevron® - for rods, glands & pistons

Description
Chevron® (known as Shallex® in some regions) is a universal multi-lip packing that is highly regarded for its reliability, long life and ability to cater for adverse mechanical conditions. It is suitable for use in split form.

This robust seal comprises a gland ring/female adapter, header/male adapter, and one or more intermediate V-shaped rings. The rings are tapered to give an initial interference when confined in the seal housing. The radial force that results, together with the fine finish of the lip, ensure a good seal at low or slack pressures. A scarf abutment is used when the seal is needed in split form.

Special features

Typical applications
Standard materials: most types of hydraulic press (main rams and drawback rams); hydraulic cylinder glands and piston heads; hydraulic valves; oil pipeline expansion glands.
Special materials: reciprocating steam, water and oil pumps; hot oil reciprocating pumps for refinery duties up to +260°C; sludge pumps and swivels.

Operating capabilities

Materials of construction (up to 250mm OD)
Gland ring/female adapter
(standard material): high performance acetal copolymer.
Gland ring/female adapter (special materials): cotton fabric proofed with hydrogenated nitrile HNBR, butyl IIR, or fluorocarbon FKM.
V-shape intermediate rings (standard material): cotton fabric proofed with blend of synthetic rubbers.
V-shaped intermediate rings (special materials):  cotton fabric proofed with hydrogenated nitrile HNBR, butyl IIR or fluorocarbon FKM. Also solid rubber or PTFE.
Header/male adapter (standard material): high performance acetal copolymer.
Header/male adapter (non-standard): can be supplied with multiple coil springs to give a degree of compensation for wear.

Materials of construction (above 250mm OD)
Full specifications provided on request.

Media capabilities
Our standard materials are suitable for use with most mineral based hydraulic fluids, most fire-resistant fluids of the water/oil or water/glycol types at  temperatures up to 100°C, and resist most lubricating oils, greases, air and water. Where fire-resistant fluids are used it is essential to advise us of the type and designation due to the variable effects that can occur with different grades.

Alternative (special) materials are available that considerably extend the range of application in terms of temperature, fluid compatibility and abrasion resistance.

How supplied
Available in radial sections from 4mm upwards (spring-loaded version from 6.5mm). Endless rings available up to 2250mm OD. Ex-stock in endless form with standard materials to suit housings to ISO5597. Other sizes manufactured to order.
