Shieldseal^® 551 - Radiation grade

Description
Shieldseal^® 551 is one of our world-beating range of lead-free elastomers specifically developed for shielding X-ray and gamma radiation. It is based on a polychloroprene (CR) elastomer, with specially formulated (lead-free) metallic fillers evenly dispersed throughout its structure.

Typical applications
Duties where an inherently elastic and resilient flexible seal is needed to prevent shine paths in active areas. Examples include: door seals, flange joints, pipe wrapping and protective garments.

Special features

Effectively maintains long-term sealing forces - which is a major advantage over traditional lead-filled PVC grades.
Easy to fold, bend and drape in sheet or strip form.
Polychloroprene grade selected for its radiation resistance and long service life.
Slightly softer grade material than Shieldseal^® 561 or 562.

Typical properties of Shieldseal^® 551
Hardness: 70 IRHD
Shielding efficiency: 2.4mm thickness of Shieldseal^® 551 has same shielding efficiency as 1mm of lead.
Chemical properties: Gives satisfactory service in a wide range of fluid media. Largely unaffected by atmospheric ageing.

How supplied
Shieldseal^® 551 is available as 'O' rings, custom mouldings, sheets and precision-cut gaskets. We are also willing to partner with equipment manufacturers and end-users of shielding elastomers to develop, prototype and evaluate materials or specific components for custom applications.
