James Walker has pledged a £100,000 donation to the Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund, following a visit to flood-stricken Cockermouth by the group’s chairman Peter Needham early this week.
”The vast majority of the 400 staff who work at our Cockermouth manufacturing plant live in the area, and we have a very close relationship with the local community. We know that all monies raised by the fund will directly help people and small businesses in the flood damaged areas”, said Peter Needham.
On hearing of the donation, Deb Muscat, an acting director of Cumbria Community Foundation, which is managing the fund, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic news. We can’t thank them enough.”
The fund was launched on Friday 20 November by Workington MP Tony Cunningham and the Cumbria Community Foundation. On Tuesday 24 November, only six days after unprecedented rainfall across the region, the local “Times & Star” newspaper reported that the fund had already raised £260,000.
At that time, donations from other organisations included £50,000 from Nuclear Management Partners, £50,000 from Cumbria County Council, £25,000 from Allerdale council and £15,000 from the Cumbria Community Foundation.
