When bolts are not tightened to the correct design tension, joint failure due to vibration loosening is a common problem. Bolt tension is critical to maintaining reliable and safe joints - traditional torque or hydraulic tensioner tightening methods do not measure or control bolt tension; they can only measure the amount of tightening power applied in terms of torque or hydraulic pressure.

In Australia, the New South Wales State Rail Authority discovered that bolts holding the brake trip mechanism – a safety device that applies the brakes if a driver passes through a red light – were becoming loose on a regular basis.
