Apprentice scheme backs company growth

Whilst many UK engineering companies are struggling to retain and recruit qualified staff, James Walker Moorflex at Bingley, West Yorkshire, has been able to grow 20 per cent, year-on-year, by retaining its experienced engineers and training new apprentices.
This site focuses on the manufacture of precision metal components — including API ring joints and bespoke items —  for the oil and gas, defence and aerospace sectors.
Its mentor-based apprentice scheme has been running for three years and now includes seven apprentices at various stages from NVQ2 to HNC and quality management.
Reported James Walker Moorflex manufacturing manager Clive Smith: "The young people who join us are committed, enthusiastic and dedicated to completing the journey to be a qualified engineer.
"They work closely with our dedicated team and are now making a significant contribution."
All apprentices go through an extensive training programme, covering workshop skills and engineering practice, supported by academic qualifications through local technical colleges.
The apprentice training scheme is a key element of the company's strategy to maintain high levels of manufacturing competence and quality control, and to provide world class products and services to customers.

Precision machining is a vital aspect of the James Walker Moorflex apprentice scheme.
