Plain sailing for urgent seal replacement
An urgent request from Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri was received by James Walker Italiana to replace the seals on the side stabiliser fins of ms Zuiderdam. This 82,000 tonne cruise ship regularly sails the Caribbean, Panama Canal and Pacific Coast of America.
The company specified the use of Walkersele® OSJ seals. as on-site joining meant the time-consuming process of removing the fins could be avoided.
The seal replacement needed to be carried out as part of dry-dock repairs scheduled to take place at Freeport in the Bahamas — but a tight schedule meant there was very little time to arrange the work.
“The request came in at short notice”, reported Alfonso Guarnieri, managing director of JW Italiana. “Fortunately, a temporary lack of available manpower, in Italy and the UK, was successfully overcome with the assistance of James Walker Benelux, who supplied an engineer for us.”
The operation was successfully completed on time in the Bahamas, reinforcing the long-term partnership between JW Italiana and Fincantieri — highlighting James Walker’s ability to meet customers’ worldwide needs at short notice.
