Walkersele® X‑Gen Helix

Grease‑pumping radial lip seal ideally suited to large diameter wind turbine shaft sealing duties.

The Walkersele X-Gen Helix represents a new generation design within our well proven family of radial lip seals for rotating shafts and rotating plant.

Lip seals were originally designed to work with oil as a lubricant, their sealing principle relying on the sealing lip running on a thin film of oil on the surface of the shaft. In modern wind turbines however, the vast majority of bearings now use high-performance greases for lubrication, bringing a whole new dynamic to the operation of the bearing seal.

This specialised grease-pumping design is specifically optimised for the sealing of the main bearings of the very largest wind turbines and can cope with dynamic radial eccentricities of up to +/- 2 mm (1/16").

  • Helical design actively pumps grease back towards the bearing and away from escaping to atmosphere, whilst dust lip acts to contain grease and prevent contamination ingress.
  • Validated to operate at dynamic radial eccentricities of up to +/- 2mm (1/16”) at surface speeds of up to 2 m/s.
  • Fatigue testing shows consistent response even at high speed, ensuring the sealing lip remains in contact with the sealing surface at all times.
  • Available in endless or Walkersele X-Gen Helix OSJ format for on-site joining, no limit to diameter – fits 32 x 25 mm standard radial seal housing.
  • Savings in maintenance, clean-up and lubrication through minimising grease loss.
  • Grease retained in the bearing improving lubrication performance, reducing risk of bearing failure or damage and extending component life.
  • OSJ variant available for simple on-site joining saving downtime and maintenance costs involved with retro-fitting seals.

Main bearing seals on large diameter wind turbines.

  • A broad range of industry standard bearing greases.
  • Resistant to water, sea-water and mineral oils.

  • Temperature: -35°C to +125°C (-31°F to +257°F) dependent on material choice.
  • Pressure: pressure differential of up to 10 kPa / 0.1 bar (1.5 psi).
  • Surface speed: 2.0 m/s (394 fpm) dependent on material choice.
  • Eccentricity: ± 2 mm (1/16”).
