From steam power to space flight, metallurgy to microbiology ‑ our products, people and technology innovations have played their part in the continuing story of global industrial development.
James Walker has been at the leading edge of sealing technology since the development of braided packing by the company’s founder over 140 years ago, more recently building expertise in elastomer compounding, thermoplastics formulation, metal machining and tension control bolting. Together these technologies combine to provide our customers with a complete performance package for virtually every industrial sealing application.
Our capabilities in these technologies has been developed in-house and is backed-up by applications engineering, research and development, comprehensive testing facilities and field engineering capabilities to provide end to end service and peace of mind for James Walker customers across all industrial sectors.
At our Materials Technology Centre in the UK, we develop and compound our own elastomer materials, holding over 300 unique formulations including many bespoke developments. Having the capability to formulate and compound our own elastomers, coupled with our comprehensive testing facilities for both materials and end products gives us total control and traceability through every stage of the manufacturing process.
Our specially formulated Devlon thermoplastics are amongst the toughest and hardest wearing available. They offer customers a wide range of benefits thanks to their mechanical properties, including corrosion resistance, low friction, impact strength and a significant weight reduction in comparison to traditional metallic counterparts. We produce complex components in Devlon ranging from 10 mm to over 2500 mm OD, and weighing up to 1000 kg.
Whilst a decision on the proposed PFAS regulation, and the likely timeline for implementation, are still being considered by the ECHA, James Walker is proactively looking at, and qualifying, alternative materials and working with its suppliers to ensure sealing materials are available that will offer the required levels of performance and be compliant with any proposed regulations.
We are an OEM quality‑approved supplier of critical metallic components offering unrivalled expertise in the machining of complex, thin-walled seals in a range of high specification alloys and titanium for use as primary barriers in high pressure applications. Our materials, products and processes are backed by full traceability, testing and quality programmes, supported by the latest technology and an ongoing commitment to training and development.
Bolted joint reliability is an established science but the vast majority of bolted joints are tightened in an uncontrolled manner; the bolt tension achieved at the end of the tightening cycle is unmeasured and unknown. To guarantee that all bolts are installed to the correct design tension requires a different measuring principle - this is the principle at the heart of our RotaBolt technology.
