Springsele guide

High pressure static seal for oil and gas applications

What are Springsele static seals?

Springsele is a range of single piece, bi-directional seals for static sealing applications, developed to meet the demanding environmental requirements of the oil and gas industry.

Designed for high pressure applications where extrusion damage is high risk, and a single piece product is beneficial.

What’s included in our Springsele guide:

  • Typical applications
Springsele has been widely adopted as the standard product for high pressure oil and gas applications including subsea and surface wellhead and tree equipment; casing and tubing hangers; high pressure pipelines and riser systems; subsea and surface connector systems plus drilling and downhole equipment.
  • Availability and sizing
Springsele has been designed for over 265 standard sealing diameters from 0.75” up to 26” in both piston and gland configurations. Typically available in 3 standard axial lengths for every diameter, with over 1,500 standard configurations to support all applications.
  • How it works - assembly, operation and properties
Springsele has been designed for high pressure applications where extrusion damage is high risk, and a single piece product is beneficial. The seal has the ability to cater for larger clearance gaps at elevated pressures and temperatures, minimising the risk of failure in installation and service. The product is easy to install, even in a blind recess. The use of integral anti-extrusion springs in the Springsele eliminates the risk of these elements becoming dislodged or damaged during assembly.
  • Materials overview
James Walker offers two main material types for Springsele; Fluoroelastomers (FKMs) and hydrogenated- nitriles (HNBRs). FKMs offer excellent resistance to oils, fuels, mineral and synthetic lubricants, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, plus H2S and sour conditions. HNBRs offer the complete package for exceptional performance and value across the widest range of applications.
  • How to specify and order
Springsele is available in many sizes and configurations. The standard range fits housings for O-rings to SAE AS568 and BS ISO 3601. The charts, drawings and tables within this guide cover all seal configurations according to the axial dimensions of the housing and mode of operation: Seal size, seal axial dimension and seal configuration (piston or rod) plus seal and spring materials.
