The primary function of a hydraulic piston seal is to form a seal between the cylinder wall and piston. These seals prevent the leakage of hydraulic fluid past the piston, containing the pressure on one side of the piston and maximising the efficiency of the hydraulic system / cylinder.
Piston seals maintain sealing contact between a piston and cylinder bore but also permit a thin layer of lubrication to coat the internal components, which is critical to the prevention of corrosion particularly in the case of single-acting pistons which may have air on one side that could contain moisture or particulate contaminants.
