Air‑con plant water pump cartridge seal

Problem

Frequent and costly pump shut downs caused by mechanical seal failures: average seal life of just two months on single seal arrangement, resulting in unnecessarily high maintenance costs.

Application

Cold water pump within air conditioning unit at a pharmaceutical plant in Brazil.

Omel Pumps A-130, horizontal configuration, 4 ¾" (120 mm) nominal shaft diameter.

Existing solution

Silicon carbide faced mechanical seals on the pump shaft.

James Walker solution

Replacement of mechanical seal with a KlickFix cartridge containing six sequentially deployable sealing lips. Stored lips are easily and quickly deployed when required and the pump put back on-line within seconds. This allows for simplified scheduling of maintenance and avoids unnecessary downtime.

Results and benefits

The first KlickFix sealing lip lasted for two months, matching the average mechanical seal life but the KlickFix cartridge contains a further five sealing elements. Helping customer achieve goals of adopting innovative technology and improving sustainability.
