Graduate Programme "Developing Engineering Leaders"
Are you a self-starter? Driven and curious? An advocate for practical engineering? Constantly seeking to improve upon and challenge convention? Aspiring to lead a company in the future? If this is you then apply to the James Walker graduate programme.
We are seeking to develop the next generation of leaders and directors for James Walker for both technical and management roles, underpinned by Engineering excellence.
Experience gained from the programme shapes future leaders for the organisation. Critical industrial engineering projects underpin each placement, and are enriched by the cultural experience from the different locations, and the variety and type of work undertaken. On completion of the programme both you and James Walker will know what type of role fits you best, and how your career can grow in the company.
Responsibility from Day One
Participants benefit from three 10-14 month placements within different James Walker companies; working across all aspects of advanced materials, design, production technology and customer engineering support. Roles include working on a specific material or product, to being a project engineer where you are responsible for developing a business case, project management, design, prototyping and validation, through being an applications engineer in a sales company dealing with customers. Training them on product, giving recommendation, and investigating performance issues.
First placements are usually based in one of our largest manufacturing centres of excellence in the UK (Cockermouth in Cumbria, Gourock in Scotland, and Bingley in West Yorkshire). As part of the engineering team in the centre of excellence you will be mentored by a senior member of the engineering team, and work on a project with your own responsibilities.
A second role is likely to be based at one of our smaller manufacturing sites with wider scope of work, and greater autonomy.
The third role is usually based within one of the James Walker international sales companies working as an Applications Engineer supporting the sales team directly with customers.
Following successful completion of the programme there is the opportunity to work and lead the business forward in a choice of geographical locations.
Development and Training
You will have accountability for, and will be challenged and mentored to take on, big projects that matter to our customers and to the business. We support this with coaching by senor directors, and training programmes. We have an accredited MPDS scheme with the IMechE, and can also sponsor chartership with the IOM3.
